Bowen Therapy

Bowen therapy helps the body to remember how to heal itself.

The gentle Bowen moves send neurological impulses to the brain resulting in immediate responses of muscle relaxation and pain reduction.

Bowen is a holistic bodywork technique that works on the fascia, the soft connective tissue of the body. It was pioneered by Tom Bowen in Geelong, Australia in the 1960s and 70s. It addresses a wide-range of health complaints, and is suitable for all ages, including babies.

A ‘Bowen move’ is a very distinctive move applied at precise points of the body in certain sequences. After a series of moves there are waiting times to allow the body to respond. The move is a rolling-type move of the thumbs and forefingers, and is designed to stimulate the tissue and nerve pathways.

It can be done through light clothing, however Viola prefers to work directly on the skin.

There are many types of Bowen techniques that Viola can use to meet the needs of the patient:

A specialised Bowen technique is called “Mind Body and Bowen”

"Mind Body Bowen" (MBB) is an approach developed by Margaret Spicer and Ann Schubert many years ago. It is mainly used with trauma, like birth trauma, emotional or physical abuse and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It is very effective and fascinating, many clients have huge emotional and physical releases with this method and are able to move on in their lives.

The client is comfortably positioned lying down. In MBB the Bowen moves are performed even more slowly than with normal Bowen work, gently and with long waiting periods in-between to give the body more time to process and respond.

The client is asked to observe what happens in this processing period, track sensations as they occur naturally in the body and to share it before the next moves.

Then the next set of moves is applied and so on… The process is different in every individual. Sensations experienced in these processing times give clues as to what procedures need to be done in the future.

Bowen for Strokes and Neurological Diseases

“Bowen for Strokes and Neurological Diseases” is another specialised Bowen technique developed and taught by Robyn Wood.

This is more like a usual Bowen treatment session but with specialised moves that address the nervous system and have a positive supportive effect after strokes or with other neurological diseases.

Baby Bowen

“Baby Bowen” is a very effective way of helping the baby with different problems, such as baby colic, crying babies and sleeping difficulties. Viola’s treatment is for both the mother and child and the procedures for the baby are very short.

To address both patients, the mother must also come with a baby-sitter. The baby receives the brief treatment after the assessment. Then the baby-sitter takes the baby for a 30 minute walk and the mother gets a treatment for relaxation. Usually 3 treatments are needed.
